Coalition Montréal, the upstart municipal party that first fielded candidates in the last municipal election, will not take part in next year’s election following the resignation of the party’s leader, spokesperson Laurent Blanchard said in a statement Monday.

Blanchard made the statement after Benoit Dorais, mayor of the Sud-Ouest borough and the party leader, announced he was leaving Coalition Montréal to start the new year as an independent city councillor.

“We’re disappointed but not surprised,” added Blanchard, who had served as interim mayor of Montreal for four months in 2013.

Coalition Montréal was founded under the late Marcel Côté, who ran unsuccessfully against Denis Coderre in the November 2013 election. Since that election, several members of Coalition Montréal have joined Coderre’s party.

Blanchard said that the executive committee of Coalition Montréal will be meeting in the coming days to choose a new leader.
